Qualcomm, LG Uplus and LG Electronics achieve 5G millimeter wave deployment in South Korea

On December 8, 2020, Qualcomm Technologies, LG Uplus and LG Electronics announced today that the three parties have successfully deployed South Korea’s first 5G millimeter wave network based on 5G commercial smartphones at the National University of Technology (KIT). The 5G millimeter wave network will provide new innovative services for teachers, students and employees of the National Jinwu University of Technology, showcase the smart campus model empowered by 5G millimeter wave technology, and promote the transformation of the education industry. This milestone is also an important step for South Korea to promote the commercial use of 5G millimeter waves. It is expected that the deployment of 5G millimeter waves in South Korea will accelerate in 2021.

Based on the LG Uplus 28GHz 5G millimeter wave network, using LG commercial smartphones equipped with Qualcomm Snapdragon™ 865 mobile platform, Snapdragon X55 5G modem and radio frequency system, you can access smart campus services.

The deployment of 5G millimeter waves is essential to unleash the full potential of 5G and meet the demand for massive growth in mobile data. 5G millimeter wave will allow leading operators such as LG Uplus to make full use of the large amount of spectrum resources in the high frequency band, helping them to more easily provide the world's fastest multi-gigabit wireless network speed, low-latency connections and cost-effective network capacity. Meet the growing mobile data needs of businesses, consumers and government organizations. Qualcomm Technologies will continue to work closely with LG Uplus to solve the challenges of investment efficiency and ecosystem development, and realize 5G millimeter wave advantages in South Korea. This milestone also demonstrates the technical advantages of 5G millimeter wave, proving that 5G millimeter wave will further empower smart campuses, enterprise indoor deployment, indoor/outdoor venues, transportation hubs, fixed wireless access terminals, and industrial Internet of Things.

Ma Dejia, senior vice president and general manager of 4G/5G business of Qualcomm Technologies, said: “We are very proud of this important 5G milestone achieved by the joint LG Uplus and LG Electronics. This will help to fully release the full potential of 5G and contribute to South Korea. Consumers, enterprises, and governments bring excellent new experiences. The long-term cooperation with these industry leaders shows how we are working together to promote the global commercial use of 5G millimeter waves. It also shows that we are committed to exploring the most cutting-edge wireless The determination of innovation and technology."

Weonseok Cho, Senior Vice President of LG Uplus B2B New Business Group, said: “At LG Uplus, we have always prioritized contributing to the development of 5G across the country. Through cooperation with Qualcomm Technologies and LG Electronics, we have witnessed the huge potential of 5G millimeter waves. We will also continue to work together to overcome challenges and realize all the advantages of 5G."

The deployment of the 5G millimeter wave network at the National Jinwu University of Technology lays the foundation for the realization of a smart campus, which demonstrates the potential of 5G millimeter wave to empower new innovative services and technologies, thereby bringing transformational teaching to campus teachers, students and employees Experience. For example, the 5G millimeter wave network will support the use of a virtual desktop operating environment, so teachers and students of the National Jinwu University of Technology can use 5G millimeter wave-enabled smartphones or laptops to study and work safely on campus anytime and anywhere. The National Jinwu University of Technology also plans to use 5G technology to build a high-quality remote classroom where teachers and students can interact closely. This will facilitate research and development collaboration between industry and academic groups, and will also enhance campus security through networked cameras empowered by artificial intelligence.
